Experimental

An experimental exercise in 3D typographic beauty with a historic depth

I love this experimental design exercises that set the imagination free. Although the purpose of this experiment is to promote the 3D prototyping capability of the UK-based Ravensbourne digital media university they really went well beyond the call of a promotion. They created an alphabet where each of the letters features a typeface rendered with a concept that relates to the history of that typeface. For example, the "C" of Courier is made of typewriter keys since Courier was the font typewriters used in the 1950's. Beautiful, original and fun. Love it! Read the complete article in Designboom

Illustrators successfully challenge digital media with traditional craftsmanship and experimentation

With digital technology becoming the main media for creating illustration art sometimes it feels as it's dictating illustration trends too much. It's refreshing to see that striking art can still be made with humble trational media. The amazing paper illustrations from Russian artist Yulia Brodskaya are a fantastic example of the resilient power of handmade crafts.  With digital technology becoming the main media for creating illustration art sometimes it feels as it's dictating illustration trends too much.

Coca-Cola Mystic concept package design, A futuristic look at package branding

This Coca-Cola concept package design is racy and sensuous. A beautiful aerodynamic shape that dares to break from any other soda bottle currently in the market. Could this 3-dimensional layered design be a hint of what the future of packaging can look like? possibly. The only problem with this design is that it has lost sight of its branding roots, the iconic curvaceous shape that has differentiated the Coca-Cola brand for decades. See more images and read the full story in the Dieline Package design website.   This Coca-Cola concept package design is racy and sensuous. Augmente Reality is coming to a business card near you, for a very good reason...

...they stand out delivering your brand message with a punch. Like any other technology its effectiveness at the end depends on the relevant nature of the message and its creative execution. Move over 3D, 4D is here moving from fantasy to branding (at a cost)

When I first watched the amazing technology used on the 600th anniversary of the Prague Astronomical Clock I was blown away. I've never seen such a combination of projection technologies and remarkable creativity. The funny thing is that at the time it didn't occurred to me its potential application to branding. Probably because the cost of a production like this would be off limits for most brands. How naive. Expensive yes, but still may be a worthy branding investment for that special event and that high profile brand. Surely Ralph Laurent thought so. They hired three different companies (MPC joined forces with United Visual Artists and Drive) to create an astounding 10 minute 4D building projection. The question is who would be next to use this extravagant branding medium and how long it would take for the impact of this technology to fade and something else to amaze us.

The future of digital displays is made of glass and design

A fantastic video that shows us what the future of digital displays (and life) can be. A beautifully executed vision where design plays a key role. With almost 10 million YouTube views, this video is also a great example of corporate viral marketing that doesn't fall into the gimmick trap and stays consistently relevant, on brand and on message.

Geotagging and Augmented Reality can be a very sexy couple (for marketers)

A clever Esquire magazine promotion using geotagging and augmented reality entices guys to go to a Barnes & Noble store with the promise that the sexy model Brooklyn Decker will pose next to them for a photo. Not a bad bait for the Esquire target crowd. There is a catch though, Ms. Decker will only appear in your iPhone virtually not in person and you would also have to be located within a 150 feet of the magazine section. You can then get yourself in the picture with the sexy (virtual) model and share it with your FaceBook friends. The app developed by GoldRun can create small GPS zones, identifying locations through their latitude and longitude, to work with site specific promotions. Read the full New York Times story.
